A Vital Hub for the Rails:
In the early 20th century, Kelso Depot played a crucial role in the era of steam locomotives. Trains traveling through this arid landscape 

faced the formidable challenge of a steep two percent grade from west of Kelso to Kessler Summit (later renamed Cima). This ascent

 required the presence of extra “helper engines” stationed nearby to assist the trains in conquering the grade. Additionally, the thirsty 

steam locomotives of the era desperately needed a reliable source of water. Kelso was perfectly situated to fulfill both roles.

A Booming Railroad Town:
Kelso Depot opened its doors in 1905, and it didn’t take long for the town to grow around it. A few months after the depot’s establishment, 

a post office, an engine house, and an “eating house” were added to serve both the railroad employees and passengers on trains without 

dining cars. As the railroad continued to expand and more employees were needed, their families also moved to the Mojave Desert to join them,

 leading to the town’s growth.

A Relic of Railroad Glory:
Today, Kelso Depot stands as a cherished relic of the glory days of railroads. Inside its walls, visitors can explore exhibits that depict the
