Kelso Depot: Where History, Nature, and Motorcycle Adventures Unite

Two-cell strap-iron jail at Kelso Depot

Nestled in the heart of the Mojave National Preserve, Kelso Depot stands as a testament to the region’s rich railroad history and offers

a fascinating glimpse into the past. This historic railroad station, lovingly restored as a visitor center, is not only a gateway to the

historical and natural wonders of the Mojave Desert but a living relic of a bygone era.

A Vital Hub for the Rails:
In the early 20th century, Kelso Depot played a crucial role in the era of steam locomotives. Trains traveling through this arid landscape

faced the formidable challenge of a steep two percent grade from west of Kelso to Kessler Summit (later renamed Cima). This ascent

required the presence of extra “helper engines” stationed nearby to assist the trains in conquering the grade. Additionally, the thirsty

steam locomotives of the era desperately needed a reliable source of water. Kelso was perfectly situated to fulfill both roles.

A Booming Railroad Town:
Kelso Depot opened its doors in 1905, and it didn’t take long for the town to grow around it. A few months after the depot’s establishment,

a post office, an engine house, and an “eating house” were added to serve both the railroad employees and passengers on trains without

dining cars. As the railroad continued to expand and more employees were needed, their families also moved to the Mojave Desert to join them,

 leading to the town’s growth.

A Relic of Railroad Glory:
Today, Kelso Depot stands as a cherished relic of the glory days of railroads. Inside its walls, visitors can explore exhibits that depict the

depot’s role in the growth and development of the region. It’s a remarkable place to gain a deeper understanding of the Mojave’s

historical significance and the role that Kelso Depot played in the region’s development.

Journey Through Time:
The ride to Kelso Depot on your motorcycle takes you along the same paths that echoed with the sounds of steam locomotives and

the hustle and bustle of railway workers. It’s a journey through time that offers a deeper understanding of the Mojave’s

historical significance.

Kelso Depot: A Living Museum of the Desert
Kelso Depot is more than just a visitor center; it’s a living museum that transports you back to a time when the railroad was the

lifeblood of the desert. It’s a place where history comes to life against the timeless backdrop of the Mojave. Whether you’re an

explorer seeking historical discoveries, a history buff eager to delve into the past, or a rider seeking the essence of the Mojave’s heritage,

Kelso Depot is a place where history, nature, and the open road unite. Your next ride through the Mojave Desert, and through the

 pages of history, awaits.
