A Symbol of Resilience and Remembrance:
Deep in the Mojave Desert, where the vast expanse of arid land meets the sky, stands the Mojave Memorial Cross, 

officially known as the White Cross World War I Memorial. This unassuming yet profoundly significant cross has been 

at the heart of legal battles and a testament to the resilience of its message.

Honoring the Fallen:
The origins of the Mojave Memorial Cross date back to 1934 when it was first erected as a tribute to those who 

made the ultimate sacrifice in times of war. Rising from Sunrise Rock, a granite outcropping along Cima Road, 

this symbol of remembrance has a unique place in the Mojave Desert, located approximately 12 miles south of 

Interstate 15 and 6 miles north of Cima, California.

A Monument Born of Valor:
The caretakers of the Mojave Memorial Cross were introduced to this solemn spot by none other than John Riley Bembry, 

a World War I medic and one of the veterans who played a pivotal role in establishing the monument. Over the years, 

the cross has been lovingly maintained by dedicated volunteers, and it even endured a reconstruction after being destroyed.

Legal Battles and Restoration:
In 2002, the cross faced a legal challenge that deemed it illegal due to concerns about the separation of church and state. 

It was boarded up, and its future became uncertain. However, in 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Salazar v. Buono that

 there was no violation of the separation of church and state when Congress transferred the land surrounding the cross 

to a veterans group. The cross was given a new lease on life.

A Stolen Legacy:
On the night of May 9–10, 2010, the cross was cut down and stolen from Sunrise Rock. This act of vandalism shocked 

the nation and resulted in a $125,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the thieves. The veterans of 

the VFW vowed to rebuild the memorial, considering it a personal mission.
